What do you think about Nestle launching a baby formula milk version of its Nespresso capsule coffee machine?

You can read the article here : http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/may/26/nestle-launches-machine-baby-milk

What are your thoughts? I’ll include mine with the best answer :)

Leaving all the breastfeeding stuff aside, let’s focus on the machine itself.

Statistically speaking the poor are the biggest consumers of infant formula. Generally uneducated (do not read as stupid, not being offensive) both parents have to work making breastfeeding more difficult than it should be. In the US, WIC (an assistance program designed to help those low on money) is the purchaser of roughly 40% of all the formula bought in the country.
This machine retails for about $290 with nothing said about the individual pods. With proper marketing (which never doubt that that is one thing Nestle is very good at, look at the way parents buy up all of Gerbers products) this will easily join cribs and strollers as an unnecessary “must-have” for every new parent below a certain income level. Driving the price of formula feeding up from roughly $1.50-$7.00 per day to just under $20!

This is absolutely capitalism at it’s best which is by no means a compliment. I think Nestle’s continued lack of adherence to WHO codes of conduct and disregard for infant safety as well as their quest to make money at all costs is appalling.

Beyond a specific demographic, this machine is meaningless. The media savvy bottle feeders won’t care and it has no impact on the breastfeeders either.
